Chelsea Clinton at UTA

Chelsea Clinton arrived for an informal Q&A session at the Palo Duro Lounge at UTA this afternoon and I was lucky enough to be able to attend. It was a crowded but mostly friendly atmosphere of students, faculty and staff with the foremost making up the majority. I spoke with two theater arts majors who were bright, knew what was going on in the world and came to sense 20 years before I managed it. Bless them for letting an old woman like me go on and bless them for saying it would be cool for me to use pics of the event that she was taking. When she gets them up on MySpace, I'll link.

I say "mostly friendly" because there was a small group of Republicans who stayed on the second floor, mainly kept respectfully quiet throughout and held up their little signs that said, "Stop Hillary Save America". I was very impressed with their attitude and want to give kudos where kudos are due. I also want to point out that they were a) all white and b) a majority of Alex Keaton look-alike males. There were a few women there--two that I saw who kept behind the males standing at the banister. Getting practice for their future of staying three steps behind their man, I gather. One of the young men yelled something about saving us from communists at one point and I had a nasty flash-back to 1980 and Ronald Reagan. It wasn't pretty at all and I did not thank the child for that one bit.

Chelsea didn't make an opening speech; she just started taking questions from the audience. We covered everything from health care to Russia and Chelsea had the answers. We weren't searched or questioned beforehand; the questions weren't vetted in any way. She handled the flat out dumb ones with grace and had intelligent and well thought out answers with back-up for the rest.

She spoke on her mother's health care plan. She described it well--it's a buy-in to the Congressional health plan, with tax credits for those who cannot afford the premiums as well as a percentage cap on how much of one's disposable monthly income can be devoted to health insurance. A person who does not take advantage of the opportunity would, upon seeking health care, be fined and asked which plan they want. If they still won't make a choice, they would be put on Medicaid or something similar. Further, she stated her mother is determined to raise the minimum wage to $9.50/hr and index it to inflation thereafter, which would allow a person to actually afford the insurance. It's also close to what I make now, so...yeah.

The environment came up several times and it seems that Clinton is dedicated to building green, sustainable businesses here to both offer new jobs and help the environment. She mentioned also that buildings are bigger contributors of greenhouse gases than our cars and there's some work to be done there. She really talked up green businesses. She also said her mother would join the Kyoto treaty when it's renegotiated in 2010.

Immigration came up which was one subject I was not real keen on Hillary about. She said that her mother wants a comprehensive immigration reform. She would open a path to citizenship for all those who are here currently except for those convicted of crimes. Those people would be deported. The folks here illegally but who have been paying taxes would pay a fine and get in line behind those who came here legally on the path to citizenship. Those not paying taxes would also pay a fine, pay those back taxes (again as a percentage of income) and get in line behind those who came here legally on the path to citizenship. It's not amnesty. It's not mass deportation, either. It's a middle of the road solution and not a bad one, in my opinion.

The war in Iraq was another thing I was concerned about with Hillary. She voted for it twice and voted for the Iran deal as well. Chelsea said that Hillary wants to sit down and come up with a plan for withdrawal. (Can you imagine it? A President who plans stuff first?!? I've almost forgotten what that looks like in the last 7 years.) Her advisers tell her that would take about 60 days to get the necessary information that is right now unavailable to her--even though she is a senator (!), even though she is on the Armed Services Committee (!!), the Pentagon keeps telling her that they don't have to tell her stuff (!!!)--at which point she would like to begin bringing home the troops one to two brigades a month as well as provide refuge for the Iraqis who helped us while we were there--some 3,500 I think she said. She wants to both provide the catalyst for change in the Iraqi parliament but to do so without creating havoc. However, Chelsea said that the problem isn't military, the problem is political and that's not going to be helped by U.S. troops.

Which brought us to Afghanistan as well. Hillary, through her daughter, says that she wishes to support Karzai way more than we do now. She's been in Afghanistan three times and has told the Bush Admin that we need to give him more support and the Bush Admin has done nothing.

She said that several times. "My mom told the White House about security problems/port security/Afghanistan/etc. and this administration did nothing."

Some other things: estate tax (repeal for those <$7 mil in assets, raise for the 0.3% of Americans with >$7mil.); support higher education by increasing Pell Grant amounts (I'd like to see them raise the income limits as well but she didn't say that); get rid of No Child Left Unharmed...oops, Behind (YAY!!!); open diplomatic discussions with everyone ("She won't go to Tehran on 1/21/09 but she believes in talking to everyone."); untie our hands diplomatically by ending our dependence on carbon-based energy; open up all the trade agreements to make sure that we are both being protected and not exploiting the other folks; get rid of the gag rule.

I have to say, I kept waffling between Obama and Hillary, Hillary and Obama, back and forth since John Edwards dropped out of the race but I think Chelsea just put me firmly in the Hillary camp.

I just wish she could have answered my question which would have been, "President George W. Bush has made an unprecedented grab of power for the executive branch of government with his warrantless wiretapping, Guantanamo Bay, signing statements, waterboarding, secrecy, "everything that I say is executive privilege is executive privilege because I say it is", etc. Will your mother take advantage of this new imbalance of power in order to get some of these programs we've been talking about through or will she restore checks and balances to this government even if it means she might not be able to do all the things she wants to do?" Oh well. Maybe next time I'm in the same room as a presidential candidate's child.

And they're both women! Whee!

(She is a daughter after my own heart, though for telling us to go check out these kinds of pictures online. It's the kind of thing I would do. It's the kind of thing my daughter would do, come to think of it.)

Sounds like a wonderful event!

It was a good event.

And I have to admit that I kept having moments where I would just stare at her, thinking about the 12 yr old girl she was and just not able to reconcile that image with this one at all. It's like looking at my sister and having to tell myself, "She's not a kid anymore. She's a grown adult. She's not a kid anymore. She's a grown adult..."

Very Cool.
My niece is going to see Obama in Corpus next week.

But on the Hillary Obama contest we disagree.
I'm for Obama. As unfair as my opinion is (and it is unfair and it is my opinion) I think Obama will finally give us the break (and by break I don't mean rest but leaving it behind) we need from the politics of the last 20 years.

Yes the right will savage him but I beleive Rush-Bot and Pander Boy Hannity influence is weakening.

But if Hillary wins the nomination I'll gladly vote for her with no reservation.

i would like it to be known that i am one of the PROUD yet respectful republicans on the second floor today at the Q&A with Chelsea Clinton and i was also holdling up a sign that said "STOP HILLARY". i think it is important that a few statements in this article be challenged, primarily not ALL of the individuals on the second floor were White, i myself and a Hispanic republican and was one of the two females you most likely saw. also it needs to be known that i disagree with your remark stating we were "three steps behind out men". i personally did not disrespectfully voice my opinion because i have a common understanding that speaking above others, especially in a situation where important issues are being discussed is impolite, regardless or whether i agree or disagree with the responses. i can not do anything about the disrespectul republicans just like you cant do anything about the disrespectul democrats.

Respectfully,
M. >>>LOPEZ<<<

All of the ones I saw were white and most of those male. And all of the women I saw were behind the men. I can only write about what I saw.

So, Ms. ***Lopez***, were you the red-head or the girl with the strange nail polish color?

I would like to say that I am a proud member of Repbulicans at UTA. I am also a white female. I would like to say that this group is run by a female president and it has many female members. We were just in class. Not skipping as many of the people did to watch Ms. Clinton. I did make it to the end of the event. I was not stading "behind" the men. I was down on the floor being a respectful spectator. I do not appreciate your remarks about our group. You should focus on the actual speech and leave us to own opinions.

My blog, my opinions. I've never pretended my blog is some kind of journalistic outlet. You should focus on your group and leave me to my opinions.

And btw, I really don't care about what you think about what I think about your group.

I love how you generalized all republicans. I thought democrats raved they were supposed to be above all that. Now that Chelsea as officially been "pimped out" can we move along and just state that Texas will never support a Clinton and that she is only here to save her mom's ass after that giant loss to Obama. It is entirely obvious that she is now behind where she once was in front of, but sending her daughter to speak where she doesn't have time for... isn't that Bill's job? That should insult mostly anyone.

For the record, I know plenty of democratic women who hate Hillary Clinton. It's not just republicans, its also Obama supporters so keep your stereotypes to a minimum and hope that hillary wins something other than 'most suits worn by a woman'.

Christina said...

Don't recall saying how I was above anything.

I know plenty of Dem women who don't support Hillary too. So what? I know a lot of Republicans who don't support Panderer McCain. Of course, if we're going to talk about pimping and prostituting oneself, let's talk about your guy and his lobbyist friend. LOL. (Check the news reports)

I'll keep my stereotypes where ever I wish. Where y'all get off coming into my house telling me what to say and not is too funny.

Oh, and if you lay down with the Christian Right, pander to the Christian Right, don't be surprised when you are equated with the Christian Right. Your man Reagan made that deal with the devil, Rove made it a freaking mantra. Now live with the results. (Like Huckabee almost getting your nomination for your party--y'all were worried there for a minute. ROTFL)

Well, I am an Obama supporter, who initially didn't care much one way or the other, and was turned off by the Clinton campaign (particularly the three big men involved- Wolfson, Penn, and Bill). Too much very blatant dishonesty, too much writing off every single state they lost as if those no one outside of California or new York matters, too much faux outrage about who shook whose hand and whatnot.

That said, if anyone could have changed my mind, it would have been Chelsea. She seems like a classy and well-balanced young woman. The campaign really needed more Chelsea and less mark penn, more Chelsea and less Howard Wolfson, and more of the genuine Hillary Clinton and less of the cheesy "change you can xerox" distortiony stuff.

Chelsea in 2016!!!! Yes we can!!!

I would vote for her in a New York minute. Not that NY is more important than anyone else or anything. (c;

After watching the debate last night, I am still voting for Hillary in the primaries but I'll be just fine voting for Obama in November. I didn't feel that way before the debate but I do now.

Hi Christina, I left you a comment at Shakesville re: Canadian doctors & pap test. Scott Lemieux also linked to the article. His commenters seemed to hit it on the head.

well-I'm glad you're feeling better about both options. I'd be voting for either one, too, if I could.

Obama is definitely getting better at the debate format.

Jesus. No wonder conservatism is in decline if these low rent junior wingnuts represent the future of the GOP. Teh Young Rethugs claim to be full of "pride"; I (*ahem* respectfully) think they're full of shit.

YMMV.

BTW, is Saint McCain "pimping out" his daughter by having her blog about her experiences aboard the Straight Talk Express? How about ol' Deadeye Dick--was he "pimping out" his daughter back in '00?

Anyone? Anyone?

Bueller?

Yeah, yeah--IOKIYAR.

Wankstains.

Aw hello Christina. I am the redhead you mentioned previously in one of your posts. I guess I arrived late to the party. Seeing fit that I am from the state your lady legislates; I wanted to get a word in of my own. Thank you for the snide remark, the one about the women standing behind their men. While it was such a lovely observation, it was a blind one at that and a typical contradictory comment that would spew from the mouth of a liberal. Your lady, Mrs. Clinton, is the leading role model for "silent women". Despite having her husband disgrace the integrity of the position of presdient, he disgraced her marriage. She stood three steps behind her man and dodged her independent beliefs for the sake of saving her last name. Honey, I am by no means standing three steps behind any man. If I was, you wouldn't have noticed me.

Christina said...

I was born and raised to 19 in the state Senator Clinton represents. Not sure what that has to do with the price of tea in China, but since you felt the need to share...

Liberals have had to learn these tactics, hon. I'm sure you don't remember the "good ol' days" but I do. Really, take a history course beyond the core. It should open your eyes to a few things.

And, seriously, don't start about Presidents and cheating. Almost all presidents have cheated on their wives and none of them have been divorced so any dirt you throw on that topic comes right back on your guys too. Funny how the "liberals" didn't go and disrupt the nation and stop doing the nation's business to impeach a man for getting a blow job. Nope, gotta give that to the Rethugs.

Keep supporting those you are supporting and you will be standing three steps behind "your" man. You won't have any choice. You and your body will become property--your father's, then your husband's and if you don't have a man, the state's. It wasn't all that long ago that a woman's life was dependent upon men and your party is all about regressing to that time.

I noticed you because of your hair--it is distinctive. Had I not seen it, I would most certainly have heard you at the end there. Air sirens have nothing on you.

Aw hello Christina. I am the redhead you mentioned previously in one of your posts.

Hello, Anonymous Republican Redhead. What, is the "name/URL" field too complicated for the average College Rethug to work out?

I guess I arrived late to the party.

That's alright; even though our lovely host is by now likely running low on refreshments, I'm sure you've already amply fortified yourself with gallons of GOP Kool-Aid.

Try not to piss all over the rug.

Seeing fit that I am from the state your lady legislates; I wanted to get a word in of my own.

Oh, goddammit--what did I say about not pissing on the rug?

Thank you for the snide remark, the one about the women standing behind their men.

Yeah, I thought that one was a keeper, too. Bipartisan comity FTW!

While it was such a lovely observation, it was a blind one at that and a typical contradictory comment that would spew from the mouth of a liberal.

Hey, I'm sensing a bit of passive aggressive hostility here. Methinks ye struck an anonymous nerve, Christina.

Your lady, Mrs. Clinton, is the leading role model for "silent women".

This should be nouveau riche. Oh, and the proper honorific is "Senator Clinton". You're welcome.

Despite having her husband disgrace the integrity of the position of presdient, he disgraced her marriage. She stood three steps behind her man and dodged her independent beliefs for the sake of saving her last name.

Hmm, I didn't realize divorce automatically precluded a name change, nor that Senator Clinton has ever remained "silent" about the well-known peccadilloes of the Clenis. But nice attempt at playing the "calculating bitch" card (although no top-quality Hitlery smear is complete without gratuitiously name-dropping Vince Foster--5 point deduction).

Honey, I am by no means standing three steps behind any man. If I was, you wouldn't have noticed me.

Elderflower, judging by Christina's recounting of your dulcet tones, I'm sure you would have been impossible to miss even if you were standing behind Giants Stadium on a Sunday afternoon in October.

*doffs fedora*

You maketh me blush, Christina.

It's been ages since I played wack-a-troll. And, boy-howdy, was it ever fun.

PS--in case ARH's contribution wasn't a drive-by, I'm not actually a contradictory, uncivil liberal; I'm one of those damn communists*. You may now commence with the weeping and gnashing of (capped) teeth.

*Milquetoast Social Democrat, if you want to get technical, ie, on the extreme rightward edge of the far left. But, I'm sure insisting on paying attention to nuance would be wasted on the Red baiters, so I won't bother parsing minutia, accuracy be damned. Consider the contradictions heightened to towering proportions.
